New Commenting Features and Guidelines
In our recent article, we were surprised to see a record-breaking 100+ comments on our site. However, it was disheartening to note that a significant portion of these comments were unrelated to the article's content. As we've mentioned before, the nature of many comments was not only off-topic but also carried tones of disrespect and degradation. We were also deeply disturbed by certain allegations and behaviors exhibited by some commenters. Such hostile remarks and actions have no place on our platform. We kindly ask all commenters to maintain civility and respect, as our aim is to offer a constructive space for current and former GDT members to share their insights.
We are committed to ensuring that the negative atmosphere we experienced at GDT is not replicated on this site.
Our Comment Conundrum
The recent surge in comments has garnered significant feedback, prompting us to consider necessary actions. While our primary objective has always been in-depth research and disseminating our findings through articles, we never envisioned taking on the role of comment moderators.
The divisive feedback from the recent comments highlighted to our team the challenges of moderating such interactions, given our limited time and resources. While the straightforward solution might be to deactivate the comments section entirely, a step we heavily weighed, we are reluctant to remove a feature that offers immense value to our readers.
We deliberated on various options, one of which was mandating commenters to log in, thereby eliminating anonymous comments. This poses a challenge as it could discourage participation from those who genuinely need anonymity, such as current GDT members. On the flip side, open commenting can invite trolls and inappropriate behavior.
This predicament has indeed placed us in a dilemma. Nevertheless, we believe we've found a potential solution.
Empowering Our Readers With New Comment Features
Instead of shutting down the comments section, we've opted for an alternative method. We're introducing enhanced comment features to enable our readers to play a more active role in overseeing the content shared on this platform. With our revised commenting system, you'll find that you can now:
- Upvote and Downvote Comments: Comments with a higher number of upvotes will gain greater visibility.
- Flagging System: If you find a comment inappropriate, you can flag it for review.
- Edit Your Comments: After posting, you have a brief window to correct or modify your comment to ensure accuracy and clarity.
- Delete Your Comments: You can remove your comments at any time. To activate this feature, you must provide a valid email address when submitting your comment. Ensure it's an email you can access.
- Media Attachments: It's now possible to enrich your comments by attaching photos and videos.
- Rich Text and Profiles: Enhance your comments using rich text, add avatars, set up a profile, and more.
- Rate Articles: Share your feedback on our pieces directly by rating them.
- And various other features and improvements to optimize your experience.
New Commenting Guidelines
Our existing commenting guidelines still apply, however the new features that have been rolled out necessitate the following additional guidelines:
Comments that receive a significant number of flags will be auto-removed. This entrusts our readers with the collective responsibility of moderating content that breaches our guidelines. We'll be evaluating the effectiveness of this method. Our primary goal is to maintain a constructive platform for all our readers.
